Beattyville Under WaterJames Madison Beatty, the first County Attorney, and his wife Josephine, donated land in Beattyville for a courthouse and jail, and the county seat soon moved from Proctor to the new Beattyville, which was chartered in 1850.
There have been many floods where the Kentucky River overflowed its banks and drowned the City of Beattyville. Every time the town cleaned up, renovated, and went back to business as usual. There have been fewer floods once the lock was constructed at Buckhorn Lake State Park, which is 30 miles upriver on the Middle Fork. |
